Photojournalism is Art

Photojournalism is art portrayed in the best way. Art can be seen as drawings, paintings or coloring but the great thing about photojournalism is it embodies art through images. It tells a story without having to use words or draw; but instead, by snapping pictures to tell one's story and their reality.

Year Created: 1865

Subjects Expression

In the image the subjects look relaxed and calm while taking the picture, which was surprising to me due to the year being 1865 and a lot of segregation and discrimination happening during the time. In the image the subjects aren't blinking and aren't overly posed which makes me wonder the purpose of the picture. Altogether their facial expressions fit their body expressions and when I was going through my research it made sense due to the time period for African Americans.

Quality of Light

The quality of light has a drastic impact on the image overall because it is black and white with no color. Since there is no color, it shows the history of the image, and I think it makes it easier for the audience to see the importance more in the picture. The direction of light changes the picture and impacts it overall by showing the emotion in the photo through the subjects during the civil war.

Rule of Thirds

The picture is centered close to the middle, but more so towards the left when they are sitting on the rocks. It was important for the photojournalist to put them close to the middle to grasp the audience's attention immediately. When I look at this picture, I see a strong portrait of black women during such a horrific time period.

Why did I choose this image?

I chose this image because it embodies and portrayed the black women during the 1865 time period which was towards the end of the civil war. This image captures them all together but distanced away from people, which to me spoke volumes. I was drawn towards the message but as well as the art portrayed in the image through the photojournalist eye.

Year Created:1930

Is the image black & white or color?

The image is in color with the option now being to have black/white or colored images in the year 1930. Since this photo was taken during the Great Depression to show that men were now not having jobs, it had a major impact during the time period. The photographer had the option to portray this image in black and white or color but of course opted for color to have a more dramatic effect.

Keep it Simple.

This photo shows a more simplistic composition of an image due to the set up and the positioning of the camera. When looking at the image, there is not much clutter because it focuses in on the 3 men in front during The Great Depression. With them standing there it creates a neat look since they are now unemployed and waiting outside of Salvation Army.

Abstraction.

This photo shows major representation because it shows what many had to go through in history. The Great Depression was a time that affected so many people, and this picture shows them waiting outside of Salvation Army because they are now unemployed. The subject matter is discernable, and many meanings can unravel from the photo because it was a time period of change for almost everyone.

Why did I choose this image?

I chose this image because of the impact it had since it touched on something that had major importance throughout history. A lot of people's lives had changed just like the men depicted in the photo who now had to be seen shopping for donations. Dorothea Lange portrayed art through these images by telling a real story that many can relate to.

Year Created: 2020

What feelings does the image create?

The feelings this image brings me is sadness because of the reason for the protest but also strength due to the unity being represented. This image still shocks me when I see it, since every age is out there to protest for such a meaningful cause. Seeing the sign say, "am I next?" from a little boy is heartbreaking and horrific which sends shock through everyone who views it.

Does the image remind you of any work of art or photograph you have seen?

This photograph reminds me of many other protests that happened for Black Lives Matter and other African Americans who lives were sadly lost. Other photographs such as when Trayvon Martin died can be related back to this protest for George Floyd. It is still sad to witness these protests happening for such devastating killings that should have never happened.

Obvious main subject, about 1/4 to 2/3 of image area.

The main subject is very big and well represented in these photos because of the meaning it gives the audience who views it. The impact of the image would change if certain objects were left out like the different signs to represent what people were fighting against. Overall, as long as people came together the point would still be made in the protest to show strong support against violence.

Why did I choose this image?

I chose this image because it speaks volumes when it comes to standing up for gun violence and violence on African Americans. I wanted to include an image from 2020 since that year had major influence for many reasons and one being the different protests that broke out to speak against such crimes. Altogether everyone from different cultures came together to fight for something that needed to be spoken up about which is extremely important.

Ultimately, photojournalism can be seen in many ways like in these three pictures. It should be seen as a branch of art that portrays true meaning behind images that are meant to be talked about.
